ABSTRACT

The study of opinion dynamics is a core object of computational social science research. In this research note we report on an exploratory study on opinion dynamics on the far right of the political spectrum. We use the example of a political party in Germany that is under a cloud of being right-wing extremist, albeit not banned by law. We consider social-media data as a promising alternative to surveys when people have an interest in expressing their political views publicly. Then the social media may enable relatively undisguised insights into worldviews even if these views deviate more strongly from the mainstream. The chapter presents findings of this study and gives a summary of methodological merits of the underlying design of a combined analysis of content (textual data) and link structure (trace data).
