ABSTRACT

In Greece, opposition to nuclear weapons and nuclear power has been considered a movement of the ‘left’. The reasons can be traced back to the Second World War, when Greece was attacked by Italy and, later, was occupied by Nazi Germany. Greece then descended into a cruel civil war that lasted until 1950. During the years that followed, successive Greek governments were under the influence of the USA, and ideas about peace were connected to Communism. IPPNW Greece was founded in 1983 as a scientific NGO, independent of political parties, and promotes peace while campaigning against nuclear weapons, depleted uranium weapons, biochemical weapons, and nuclear power plants. Greece, a member of both the EU and NATO, has experienced a terrible economic crisis. International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons in Greece work on three levels: education in schools and public education; mass media outreach; and meetings with the government.
