ABSTRACT

The goal of International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons (ICAN) was clear, a convention prohibiting nuclear weapons. Swedish Physicians against Nuclear Weapons was an early member of what was then called the ICAN International Working Group. Since 2012, Swedish Physicians against Nuclear Weapons has been one of the ten organizations which make up ICAN’s International Steering Group. ICAN instead began to work with non-nuclear weapon states to negotiate such a convention, even if the nuclear weapon states were not around the table. Since 2012, Swedish Physicians against Nuclear Weapons has been one of the ten organizations which make up ICAN’s International Steering Group. Internationally, ICAN began to focus on the discourse around the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. At the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference it was – almost for the first time – discussed by states in disarmament fora.
