ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the field of military history, and traces the origins and evolution of the field. It explores some methodological issues that are unique to military history. The chapter presents examples of military history projects conducted by undergraduate researchers. Military history, like political history, is a very old field of inquiry. Most societies also developed written traditions for recording military exploits. Conventional military history developed out of this tradition. Over the past half-century or so, military history has struggled to maintain its position as a thriving academic field. Military historians publish in other venues beyond traditional academic and military circles. The chapter offers examples of real projects conducted by undergraduate researchers in history and presented before public audiences in written and oral formats.
