ABSTRACT

Histories of science, and related histories of technology and medicine, are often presented to secondary students in snapshots that highlight individuals understood to have been brilliant. This chapter offers a glimpse of how historians study science, technology, and medicine. It presents an overview of how these fields developed, and explores the kinds of research questions practitioners ask, the methods they use in seeking answers to those questions, and how they share their new knowledge with others. The chapter provides sample undergraduate research projects from these fields, and a list of additional resources. It shows how far these fields can go beyond a record of individual scientific achievements. The chapter offers examples of real projects conducted by undergraduate researchers in history and presented before public audiences.
