ABSTRACT

The history of race is a comparatively recent development within the discipline of history. This chapter explores the history of race and provides an overview of how this subfield developed. It discusses the methods used by practitioners, from the research questions that guide their work, to the kinds of primary sources they use, to the different ways they share the results of their research. The chapter lists examples of undergraduate research projects that address histories of race. The history of race emerged as a distinct subfield by the 1970s. By the late 1980s the history of race was firmly established as a recognized subfield within the discipline of history. This chapter offers examples of projects conducted by undergraduate researchers in history and presented before public audiences.
