ABSTRACT

In 1962, Rachel Carson published Silent Spring, which critiqued the lack of regulation surrounding pesticide use. This chapter provides an overview of the field of environmental history. It traces the field's emergence and evolution, highlighting key studies and methodologies that helped shape the field. The chapter provides examples of undergraduate research projects in environmental history, and presents a list of useful resources to delve deeper into this growing subfield. In the modern United States, people slowly became more concerned about the negative impacts certain human activities had on the environment. Environmental historians also engage with audiences outside of academia. The chapter offers examples of real projects conducted by undergraduate researchers in history and presented before public audiences.
