ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part traces the birth and growth of what many now refer to as the undergraduate research movement, and describes some of the benefits of undergraduate research. It focuses on the role of mentors. The part outlines some of the values and best practices of award-winning mentors, describes various models of undergraduate research mentoring and provides a sampling of research activities in history. Although written primarily for those who are considering embarking on an undergraduate research mentorship journey and those who have just begun such a journey, the broader context and ideas offered can be useful to mentors at all stages.
