ABSTRACT

Historical research has changed remarkably with the rise of the internet and related digital resources and tools. This chapter provides an overview of the reality of conducting research during this era so that the researcher can think critically about new technologies they use in their research. It defines digital history and outlines some of the benefits and challenges it brings to researchers. The chapter provides guidance and ideas for how to successfully navigate the ever-evolving digital world as researchers in history. Historians regularly use a more specialized kind of catalog called a finding aid. Social media offers historians an amazing amount of information and first-hand accounts of events. The Presidential Records Act of 1978 shifted the ownership of presidential records from private to public.
