ABSTRACT

Religion and the Catholic Church played a significant role in the process of Poland’s regaining its independence in 1989. Given this, the issue of religious freedom in the public educational system over the years has drawn a great deal of attention from both academia and public policy. This chapter examines the Polish educational and constitutional statutory law along with decisions of the Polish Supreme Court and the Polish Constitutional Court on religion in the public school system. The chapter also discusses issues related to religion and ethics classes, personal development education programs, and the religious freedom of teachers in Polish public schools.
