Religion and the Public School Curriculum in Brazil

In 2017 the Supreme Court of Brazil decided that public elementary schools should provide confessional religious education with non-compulsory enrollment. Prior to implementation of this decision, this ruling depends on regulations states and municipal officials adopt. This chapter comments on the Court’s decision, its rationale and constitutional basis, and the challenges faced in public school curricula related to the religious beliefs of their teachers and students.
