ABSTRACT

The agricultural sector in South Asia (SA) has experienced diversification that has been unique in terms of the set of commodity groups. While the domestic markets remain dominant, trade within SA and outside SA regions has also expanded. The potential can be substantial in terms of geography, commodity, the scope for products produced under contract farming and traded in SA. The economic stakes remain high for further agricultural modernization in SA, including contract farming, and productivity growth to realize such potentials can be significant if continuous investments are made to sustain past productivity growth.
