ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the development process of Bangladesh’s agriculture, focusing on three major kinds of cereal—wheat, maize and rice—and using a value chain approach. It indicates that smallholder wheat farmers in Bangladesh are delinked from the market value chain, as they produce mainly for self-consumption. In contrast, the maize farmers in Bangladesh are linked with the market value chain as maize is used in Bangladesh for feed. There is a mismatch in the rice market in Bangladesh; to meet higher demand for slender and long grain rice, millers polish bold grain rice and supply it in the market in some specific brand names. The chapter suggests policy implications to link the smallholder farmers in the market value chain to improve the livelihoods of the resource-poor farmers.
