ABSTRACT

Family – indeed, life – can be complicated, perhaps especially for fostered youth like Grace, who is about to be moved to a new placement for the fourth time in the span of just a couple of years. Grace’s bio mom is loving-yet-flawed, and Grace’s soon-to-be caregiver, Mo’, is excited and nervous. Meanwhile, Grace’s caseworker, Cal, is burdened-yet-hopeful, while Grace has mixed feelings and longs for a sense of normalcy. Taken together, this story highlights uncertainties of the foster care system and relational and experiential complexities of the foster square, as well as illustrates what family can be but sometimes is not.
