ABSTRACT

The author uses personal narrative and Facebook posts to explore issues of class and feelings of being an outsider in academia and the places she lives. Her essay takes us on a semi-chronological journey, starting near the beginning of graduate school, but also reflecting on her childhood home. She describes various poignant moments where she realizes that she is unlike the others around her, partly because of class. As she details the process of learning to act her “new class,” she battles feeling that she must lose one in order to adopt the other.
