ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the concepts related to best practices for the management of individuals with life-limiting oncologic diseases secondary to malignant neoplasms. Concepts described include incidence and mortality globally and specific to the United States; disease characteristics including diagnostic criteria, classification systems for types, grades and stages, and typical symptom presentation; common interventions including surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology; and early and late-stage disease presentation. Conditions such as disease and treatment-related side effects, skeletal, liver, pulmonary, and central nervous system metastatic disease, and cancer-related emergencies are detailed. Concepts such as the cancer survivorship continuum and the phases of oncology rehabilitation are also outlined.
