ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the concepts related to best practices for the management of individuals with life-limiting conditions secondary to accidents and unintentional injuries. Concepts described include: incidence and mortality rates globally; condition characteristics including typical symptom presentation; and common presenting scenarios by injury type. Causative factors such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, and work-related injuries are detailed, and the management of the effects of these types of injuries including psychosocial, emotional, and financial is outlined. Concepts such as cultural considerations associated with stigma, and methods for effective communication such as Kleinman’s Questions and Campinha-Bacote’s Process of Cultural Competence Model are also reviewed.
