ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the concepts related to best practices for the management of individuals with life-limiting conditions secondary to cerebrovascular diseases. Concepts described include incidence and mortality rates globally and specific to the United States; condition characteristics including typical symptom presentation by type of stroke; diagnostic criteria; causative risk factors; common presentation by diagnosis; and early and late-stage disease trajectory. Diagnoses such as acute and chronic stroke are detailed, as well as conditions such as aphasia, dysphasia, hemiparesis, hypertonicity, hypotonicity, and gait deviations. Outcome measures by impairment are also described, as is the multidisciplinary management of cerebrovascular diseases, including neurologic rehabilitation.
