ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the concepts related to best practices for the management of individuals with life-limiting conditions secondary to the diagnosis of diabetes. Concepts described include incidence and mortality rates globally and specific to the United States; condition characteristics including typical symptom presentation; diagnostic criteria; causative factors such as genetics and lifestyle; common presentation by diagnosis; and early and late-stage disease trajectory. Timing of onset and types of diabetes diagnoses such as insulin-dependent, non-insulin-dependent, and hyperglycemia in pregnancy (HIP) including the conditions of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) as well as diabetes in pregnancy (DIP) are detailed, as well as conditions below the diagnostic threshold including prediabetes, non-diabetic hyperglycemia, and intermediate hyperglycemia. The medical management of diabetes, including interprofessional rehabilitation interventions such as lifestyle and behavioral modifications, are outlined.
