ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the concepts related to best practices for the management of conditions and symptoms associated with life-limiting illnesses. Concepts described by condition include frailty; distress (e.g. physical, emotional, and spiritual); cachexia; breathlessness; pain; pathological fracture risk (e.g. skeletal metastasis); lymphedema and edema; delirium, confusion, restlessness, and agitation; and abdominal and pelvic floor symptoms (e.g. ascites, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and incontinence). Issues associated with immobility and bed rest are outlined and the presentation of impending death for individuals at the end of life is described. The medical management of these conditions, including interprofessional rehabilitation and appropriate intervention strategies, are presented.
