ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the best evidence-based practices for outcome measurement of conditions and symptoms associated with life-limiting illnesses at the end of life. The purpose of outcome measurement, and the steps in selecting an appropriate measure, are discussed. Recommended outcomes are described by condition, including performance status; pain; fatigue; balance deficits and fall risk; gait speed; self-efficacy; activities of daily living; and quality of life. Based on the available literature, issues associated with appropriate outcome measure selection are outlined, including psychometric properties, clinical utility, and patient population indications. Recommendations for rehabilitation, the need for interprofessional referrals, and the risk factors and/or indications based on the results, are discussed.
