ABSTRACT

Although many of the physical interventions performed by therapists are the same or similar as with “non-terminally ill” patients, one of the commonly cited challenges for these care providers are issues related to communication with the patient and family. This chapter will describe best practices for delivering difficult news and addressing commonly asked questions for therapists from patients and families. This chapter will also discuss best practices for navigating communication with the interdisciplinary team to collaboratively facilitate an optimal treatment plan and course. Grief and bereavement are important concepts for the clinician working with patients at the end of life. Understanding communication challenges related to saying goodbye and loss and bereavement is a critical skill for an effective therapist.
