ABSTRACT

The natural system—the universe, the solar system, and the earth—is composed of time, space, and material; it is the most basic world of existence, and it provides living organisms with the fundamentals they need for their existence. This chapter deals with leaders in organizations and delve much deeper into this rich subject. It examines the concepts of “values” and “value,” looking at their genesis and the relationship between values, beliefs, attitudes, and norms. The chapter introduces one to the triaxial model, a framework for intelligently identifying our values and understanding their significance in our lives. It also offers methodologies and tools to achieve value alignment—using the triaxial model as a fundamental stepping-stone in the process of Coaching by Values. From an economic perspective, “value” is the measure of the significance or importance of something. In this sense, values are criteria used to evaluate things with respect to their relative merit, adequacy, scarcity, price, or interest.
