ABSTRACT

Coaching in Masters Sport has different traditions, established practices, and potentialities compared with other sporting contexts. This is the case for coaching at and around Masters competitions, where at times coaches are prominent at events, and in other circumstances they are not present at all. This contrasts with the vast majority of competitive sport situations where the involvement of a coach is ubiquitous. While this is but one of several prospective differences in coaching Masters Athletes (MAs) compared to other contexts, it is one of the most publicly visible. Therefore, this chapter seeks to position coaches as potential influencers in Masters Sport competitions, first, by offering some comparisons of coaching across contexts, then critically looking at the current status of coaches in Masters Sport competitions, and finally working through challenges and opportunities for coaches in competitive Masters events.
