ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the social influences from significant others on adults’ sport participation, as well as how they offer gateways into Masters Sport. Family and significant others have considerable influences on the social identities of adult athletes, and thus, it is vital to convey to coaches the importance of broadly understanding the social-relational context of Masters Sport. The chapter then explores unique dimensions of how Masters coaches lead adult peers and the complex and fluid roles that coaches have in building positive relationships within their teams, through an examination of the Masters Team Sport Model of Interdependence.
