ABSTRACT

After reviewing approaches to measuring professional identity, this chapter introduces a novel psychometric method for measuring professional identity through professional values. This method combines an established methodology for identity measurement, Identity Structure Analysis (ISA)/Ipseus, with the Ideal Match method that relates actual to ideal profiles. The instrument measures the values held by respondents and compares these with an ideal pattern for a professional. This approach is based on ISA and its tool Ipseus, and the approach is described in detail. The chapter then describes Nurse Match: the development, use and evaluation of an instrument for values-based recruitment in student selection, and tutorial guidance in Nursing. The evaluation of the instrument is summarised. Finally, the chapter considers the potential and first steps for developing a similar instrument in Medicine.
