ABSTRACT

One of our aims in producing this book was to offer ideas for the professional training curriculum in the caring professions. We invited all contributors, whatever their topic, to reflect on the three themes of the book of which Mastery is one. In principle, therefore, all of the chapters in this book should have some implications for the initial training curriculum, some more obviously than others. A consensus has emerged in the book that a comprehensive model of Professional Identity (PI) should be the overall organising idea in the curriculum. If such an approach was adopted, this would have implications for selection; aims and objectives, teaching and learning methods, assessment and careers guidance. In the remainder of this chapter, we will look at ideas for a curriculum with PI as its overarching theme and organiser. The curriculum could be called the ‘Curriculum for Professional Identity Development’ or CuPID which may be a useful acronym to keep the curriculum aim on the PI target!
