ABSTRACT

This chapter centers on the Burning Man festival, a yearly gathering of a ten-day event held in the Nevada desert at Black Rock City in a temporary urban encampment of 60,000. Because of the cancellation of the festival due to the Covid19 pandemic in 2020, it is possible to study how the prominent urban space component of all Burning Man festivals is reconfigured in virtual form. All of the virtual festivals use the event’s urban form as the guiding metaphor.
