ABSTRACT
The election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018 was the result of a complex alliance that, among other groups, brought together economic liberals, religious conservatives and segments of the military. These groups shared the rejection of left-wing politics embodied by the Workers Party and associated with an agenda of state-driven economic policy and minority rights. Exploited by the far right, polarisation and anti-left discourse fostered the resurge of anticommunist narratives and historical revisionisms dedicated to whitewash the history of ‘the right’ by disseminating alternative versions of historical events such as the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship and even Nazi Germany. This chapter examines some of the historical revisionisms employed by the Brazilian far right in an attempt to understand the role of these alt-histories in their narratives about Brazil and about themselves.
