ABSTRACT

This chapter claims that Christianity, by essence, and building on Judaism, is a historical religion, based on a faith-infused reading of the past and present, with a view to the future and to eternity. Starting with liturgical observations, the chapter explores the changing fortunes of historical theology, the complex biblical notion of time, as well as hermeneutics of Scripture in Tradition, dogma, and Church Magisterium. A realistic imagination is key to linking past memories with their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, with the faithful’s present, and with the future of both humanity and creation, until they enter eternity with God.
