ABSTRACT

Social cognitive skills emerge throughout childhood with maturation into early adulthood. The relationship of social cognition to peer relationships and social skills highlights the importance of including social cognition in a psychological assessment. There are a variety of assessment methods suitable to assess children and these are reviewed in this chapter. They include observation of the child in the school or home environment, child-based performance measures and questionnaires for children, parents and educators. While there are limitations to existing social cognition assessment tools including lack of developmentally appropriate tools and population-based norms, significant innovation has occurred in the last few years that attempts to address some of these challenges.
