ABSTRACT

Social cognition is rapidly growing as an important domain of individual assessment, be this for educational, research or clinical purposes. There are many assessment tools already described in the literature and many more are being developed. This chapter overviews some of the basic kinds of assessment tools (e.g. self and informant questionnaires versus performance-based measures including psychophysiological measurement) available and some of the psychometric standards we need to consider when selecting an assessment tool such as reliability, validity and normative data. The chapter then overviews some of the most commonly used, as well as new and innovative measures, available for the main domains of social cognition identified to date: facial identity recognition, emotion perception, theory of mind, empathy, attributional bias, social communication, social perception and related domains such as self-awareness and social behavior.
