ABSTRACT
Whoever is familiar with Austrian politics in the last quarter of the nineteenth century will not be astonished at reading the following sentences from the editorial of a Viennese newspaper. The article deals with the Dreyfus affair:
The entire banking and investment gang, more or less Jewish, fights for Dreyfus and hopes to advance its unjust cause by winning Dreyfus’s just cause. When Dreyfus is found innocent, they expect to be acquitted of the crimes of usury and exploitation. The courageous and high-minded attack of Zola is followed by the suspect band of vicious and greedy Jewish parasites, who hope for their personal whitewash and for the opportunity to commit further crimes as a result of this affair.
Das ganze Gelichter von der mehr oder weniger jüdischen Finanz kämpft mit für Dreyfus und hofft, mit dieser guten Sache seine schlechte Sache zu retten, und erwartet, wenn die Unschuld von Dreyfus erwiesen wäre, von den Verbrechen des Wuchers und der Ausbeutung freigesprochen zu werden . . . hinter [Zolas kühnem und edlem] Angriff marschiert die ganze verdächtige Bande der jüdischen Schmarotzer, und gierig erwartend tückisch, daß irgendeine persönliche Reinwaschung für sie herausspringe und Gelegenheit zu neuer Missethat gebe. 1
