ABSTRACT

Evidence-based policing (EBP) has become a global movement. For some, EBP is closely linked to experimental testing of police interventions. But this is too narrow an interpretation of EBP, which has developed into an applied management approach. This chapter explores the challenges of globalizing EBP through three very different case studies: the testing and dissemination of police-led diversion models; the global implementation of community policing; and the use of an EBP approach to support police reform in India. The case studies are developed and discussed in the light of Rogers’ model of diffusion of innovation and Bayley’s framework for police reform, with a view to drawing out the lessons for sustainable development of EBP.
