ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on obstetric violence shown through images produced by Chilean women who work in the health sector. It increases awareness regarding obstetric violence and reflect upon the question how do women and healthcare professionals feel about these practices of a violent nature? The social acceptance of obstetric violence practised in medical procedures makes it invisible. Women who suffered obstetric violence were convened as well as partners and health experts to group discussions. The current legal void regarding obstetric violence also shows that it is an issue that has no visibility. The Chilean legislation covers other aspects of maternity such as in the professional sphere in the case of maternity leaves before or after the birth of the child. These are creations produced in reaction to obstetric violence and which describe giving birth as a mechanical process.
