ABSTRACT

This chapter describes author work as an Art Therapist within a perinatal mental health service in the voluntary sector in central Scotland. An exploration of themes and case material show how Art Therapy facilitates recovery and growth from perinatal distress such as post-natal depression, anxiety and birth trauma. In psychological terms, the act of idealisation may be a defence against the anxiety of knowing a part which is deemed not good enough or is unacceptable in some way; a fanciful imagining that allows temporary departure from the negatively perceived part within. The institution of motherhood is held as an ultimately rewarding and fulfilling experience, and for many women this is true. The service offers counselling and support to families experiencing perinatal distress. Referrals are taken for parents who have a child under the age of two, either as a self-referral, or from a health and/or social care professional.
