ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of how the law regarding UAVs has developed primarily in the United States (US) where drone use is rapidly accelerating, and considerable time and effort has been spent integrating drone regulation into a well-developed legal framework. The regulatory structure in the US provides a good indicator as to where future drone regulation is likely headed in the US and is a good potential marker for other jurisdictions currently less advanced in their consideration of drones issues. Reviewing this regulatory structure also provides valuable information about how effective existing regulatory approaches actually are and provides a good foundation for navigating the uncertain regulatory outlook in the coming decade.
