ABSTRACT

European Union (EU) Delegated Regulation 2019/945 and Implementing Regulation 2019/947 replace most of the existing domestic or national provisions on drone operations in EU member states from 31 December 2020. Notwithstanding the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU, these regulations were adopted by the UK on its departure date, and a broad overview of the impact of these Regulations and their intersection with UK law is provided.

The UK has been at the forefront of aviation regulation throughout its development and expectations are that it will remain so. While the UK has left the EU and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), it is expected that at least initially regulations will continue to mirror those of the EU and that the close neighbours, with many years of technical cooperation behind them, will continue to influence one another’s development.
