ABSTRACT

“Business model” is a concept that has played a fundamental role in management studies and in the professional discourses of managers and employees. This is because the business model is the way through which the company creates, distributes and captures value. The literature on business model is recent, fragmented and with several gaps still to be filled. This scenario is also strongly conditioned by the continuous changes in the environment in which companies operate. This chapter, structured with a literature review methodology, aims to shed light on the concept of the business model, what we know about it and what we don't yet know, while also playing a pioneering role in the following chapters of this book.
