ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights a language teacher’s account of her experiences in becoming a professional teacher in Turkey. The impact of various roles experienced throughout teaching career on the development of multiple identities and the successful resolution of these identities in a single identity was reported from a life-story perspective. Narrative Inquiry as a prominent approach used in identity research was adopted, and three semi-structured interviews were conducted to reveal the professional identity formation. A shift from a technicist to a professional teacher was observed. A transformative view of teacher professionalism was interpreted, and the journey of becoming a successful language teacher was elaborated. Results implicated that taking an active role in various positions related to the profession and participating in seminars and teacher training activities bear a positive influence on teacher professional development.
