ABSTRACT

Sport is a prized and cherished part of our cultures. Gender equity, that is, to mean fairness of treatment for women and men according to their respective needs, in coaching is a long-standing issue and evidenced by the under-representation of different groups of women and reported poorer professional experiences. This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on how sport shapes and in turn, is shaped by gender. It provides a sense of context to the research and action that has occurred on the subject matter of gender equity in sports coaching. The book presents suggested strategies for supporting a more inclusive and balanced sport coaching workforce, grounded in evidence and insight from some of the leading researchers in this field. It discusses examples of evidence-based practices from around the world that have made a difference to creating gender-equitable coaching environments.
