ABSTRACT

Understanding sport as a gendered institution helps us examine how and why gender is such a powerful factor in organisational processes and how gender bias and gender stereotypes influence the recruitment, hiring, retention, and advancement of women at all levels of sport coaching. In this chapter, the authors advance strategies to make meaningful changes within sport organisations in support of women in sport coaching and highlight that any meaningful changes must first account for gender biases and the impact of these biases on women’s experiences in coaching. They begin with a brief overview of biases that impact women in coaching and then provide a more detailed discussion regarding how biases impact women in coaching. The authors then consider how organisations can begin to address gender bias at the individual level and some of the challenges inherent in those practices. Finally, they discuss organisational practices that can have an impact on mitigating bias and supporting the advancement of women in coaching.
