ABSTRACT

This chapter argues for equality (50/50) for women coaches at all levels of sport participation and sport competition. It details the historical and current statistics on women and coaching and illustrates a number of recent critical initiatives. The chapter highlights why the number of women coaches is still low and how LaVoi’s Ecological Intersectional Model and various research studies help us understand the complexity of the issues and proposes a clear path forward for equality for women coaches in the world of sport. LaVoi’s model documents the individual, interpersonal, organisational, and sociocultural forces influencing women’s experiences with sport coaching. The authors argue that the time has come, long overdue, to ensure creating transformational change in the world of sport coaching. LaVoi’s model helps us understand why we have not moved forward and what we must consider in order to transform sport.
