ABSTRACT

Investigative Interviewing has been utilised by law-enforcement agencies in Australia since its introduction in the 1990s. This chapter reflects on where the theory and practice has come from and examines the current investigative interviewing context in Australia in 2020 – what challenges and opportunities exist and how research and innovation may assist in developing answers and informing future practice. The authors seek to draw on their operational and training experience to offer academics and practitioners a clarity of understanding in respect of the “Free Recall” and “Conversation Management” frameworks used for conducting interviews. We then look to the future and consider whether technological advances, particularly around eLearning content and scalable online training, may represent an opportunity to address some of the key issues impacting investigative interviewing in Australia.
