ABSTRACT

This chapter will explore the contemporary trends and issues in terrorism today. It will examine the challenges and opportunities that law enforcement and government face in countering terrorism and the rapidly shifting environment. A number of themes will be discussed, including the issues of: returning fighters; community engagement as part of prevention; the re-emerging right-wing extremism threat; the framework and policies that Australia has to deal with terrorism and their impact on integrating and aligning the operational relationship between the Commonwealth and states and territory police forces. It will also look at the impact of events and conflicts overseas on the ground on communities and government in Australia and discuss the need for law enforcement to maintain the capability not only to respond tactically to terrorism but also to constantly monitor and effectively analyse those trends, shaping the country’s policy and response.
