ABSTRACT

This chapter will look at three types of cybercrime – organised online investment fraud, distribution and sale of illicit drugs in darknet forums, and online child sexual abuse materials. Each of these types of crimes will be explained from both a policing perspective with a case study provided for each theme. Policing will be considered from the point of view of running an investigation. Many areas of cybercrime, such as online investment fraud, involve private investigation firms who may later work with law enforcement or intelligence on a case. Other areas of cybercrime such as online child sexual abuse materials are policed exclusively by law enforcement. The authors have done interviews with investigating authorities on different research projects that will be incorporated into the analysis where appropriate, and they will draw on their experience working with private organisations who conduct audits and investigations for victims of cybercrime. The difference in public and private investigations will be analysed, alongside an exploration of the issues and challenges cybercrime presents to investigations and policing in general.
