ABSTRACT

The most important job of the police is protecting people from violence. Violence can take many forms, for instance, domestic violence, sexual violence, and murder. Protecting people from violence has multiple aspects that will be outlined in this chapter and discussed with regards to how policing can be improved. If crimes are reported, then effective investigation is needed so that offenders are identified and prevented from being violent in the future. This generally requires police to interview witnesses, victims, and suspects effectively and manage investigations well. Some of the evidence on enhancing investigations is discussed in this regard. In addition, intelligence can be used to identify patterns of offending to prevent future violence. High-risk offenders can also be identified and responses developed that reduce their risk of violence.
