ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses in perspective the significant strides in the India-Israel bilateral relations, specifically in the maritime-military domain. It examines significant historical developments in the period from 1948 to 1992. While India–Israel relations have flourished since 1992 on multiple fronts, the defence technology aspect has undoubtedly dominated the bilateral engagement. This was primarily driven by the demonstrated capability of Israeli weapons systems in multiple conflicts, which won the admiration of the Indian military establishment. While the military equipment and technology facet of naval relations with Israel progresses satisfactorily, there is significant potential for collaboration in the operational realm that remains yet untapped. The chapter examines potential areas for greater naval collaboration and cooperation between India and Israel, which could contribute significantly to maritime security in West Asia and the larger Indian Ocean Region.
