ABSTRACT

This chapter sets the stage for the edited book. It first frames the relationship between Africa and Europe from a strategic perspective, looking at the present circumstances and above all looking at the midterm scenario of high interdependence between the two continents. The chapter then introduces the multistakeholder perspective and indicates a pluralist reading of the African-European relationships as a necessary approach to capture the complexity, the challenges, and also the opportunities in this engagement. In the final part of the chapter, a synopsis of the book and its macro structure is presented.
