ABSTRACT

Relative age appears to have an important imprint on psychosocial youth development in both education and sport contexts. Our chapter highlights the role of age disparities in youth on pertinent education- and sport-based issues. In addition, we provide the state of the science on this topic and offer future directions for research that promotes equitable learning and developmental environments. As youth sports continue to grow globally, a complete ecology of youth development through sport needs to be sufficiently considered to reflect and understand the nature of relative age’s influence on development.
